Hearing loss or deafness is such a condition wherein the ability to hear or detect sound frequencies is completely or partially impaired.
Types of Hearing Loss
Conductive Hearing Loss
It occurs when the sound frequency is not efficiently conducted through the outer ear canel to the eardrum and the tiny bones (ossicles) of the middle ear. It usually involves reduction in ability of hearing faint sound. This is one of the most commonly found hearing problem in kolkata
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
It occurs when the inner ear nerves (cochlea) gets damage. Cochlea is the nerve pathway from inner ear to the brain where the sound vibrations are converted into neural signals. So any severe damage to inner ear nerves can cause permanent hearing damage. This dysfunction may be present from birth due to genetic or developmental abnormalities, or arise through trauma or disease during the lifetime of an individual. There are also very unusual sensorineural hearing impairments that involve the VIIIth cranial nerve, the Vestibulocochlear nerve or in rare cases, auditory cortex. Damage to parts of the brain that process auditory signals can lead to a condition in which sounds may be heard at normal thresholds, but the quality of the sound perceived is so poor that speech cannot be understood. Sensorineural hearing loss associated with abnormalities of the auditory system in the brain is called Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD).
Mixed Hearing Loss
It is a combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss at the same time. Both the middle and inner ear are involved. This hearing disorder can also occur when a person first just has a permanent sensorineural hearing damage and then also develops a conductive hearing damage. (For example, a person who already has a sensorineural loss gets a middle ear infection, and the two types of loss combine to create a greater hearing damage.) Some other instances of mixed hearing loss are the result of the outer and inner ear being malformed, which causes both types of hearing damage.
With mixed hearing loss, the conductive part may be treated, but the sensorineural part is usually permanent. We at Bengal Speech and Hearing, provide best hearing healthcare treatment for hearing loss in Kolkata by prescribing the exact hearing aids as per your requirement.
