Have you heard of the term Tympanometry? Tympanometry is an examination to test proper functioning of middle-ear.When it comes to hearing, loss of hearing is often ignored and neglected by most. The reasons could be many these may be avoiding any embarrassment from peers, possibility of overlooking the problem, etc. Whatever be the reason but loss of hearing could mean missing out on vital information thereafter causing isolation and then depression. So care must be taken immediately once the problem is identified and a visit to an audiologist is a must. We at Bengal Speech and Hearing, hearing loss clinic in Kolkata have always tried to share with people at large to spread awareness of hearing loss related facts. In this blog we would discuss about Tympanometry:
Tympanometry middles ear examination, which assesses the condition of the middle ear and also the mobility of the eardrum also known as the Tympanic membrane and also conduction bones. The examination is carried out by creating air pressure vibrations in the ear canal. Tympanometry is not a hearing test but it is a test to evaluate the energy transmission levels in the middle ear. It forms an important part of audiometric assessment as it helps to distinguish between sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. The results of the Tympanometry are recorded on a graph known as Tympanogram.
The Tympanometry Procedure:
Prior to the actual test the doctor would look inside of the ear canal with a special instrument for looking into the ear, called otoscope. This is done for ensuring that no foreign object obstructs the eardrum. Following this a probe type device is placed in the ear. This is done to generate different ear pressures in the ear as a result of which the eardrums move back and forth. The measurement of the eardrums along with other readings is recorded in the Tympanogram as mentioned above. During the entire process the patient on whom this test is being carried out may feel a bit uncomfortable as he or she is likely to hear loud tones as the device starts recording the measurements. The process of Tympanometry can be carried out in any persons irrespective of age and may also be carried out on young children. When the procedure is being carried out, one should not speak or swallow as if the same is done it would lead to in correct readings being recorded. So in case of children this may be a genuine problem, in which case the child’s attention needs to be diverted so that the entire process can be carried out smoothly and correctly. The full test though requires very little time and there are no major risks involved in carrying out the Tympanometry test.
Normal results from the test may be absence of any fluid in the middle ear, normal pressure in the same, normal movements of the eardrum and conducting bones.
Some Abnormal results may be presence of fluid in the middle ear, pressure beyond normal range, perforation of the ear drum, lack of contact between conduction bones of the middle ear, etc.
