Thus with further neglect the hearing loss may suddenly get aggravated. It is important that in case you are suffering from it, you must have it detected and treated thereafter. To have the problem detected there are certain hearing tests which are essential. They help to assess the type and degree of the same.
What is Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA)?
Pure tone audiometry is a hearing test used to determine the presence or absence of hearing loss. Audiometer is the equipment which is used to conduct the test. If hearing loss is present, the audiologist will be able to determine both type and degree of hearing loss. Thus this test is essential to determine whether you need treatment. It also helps to determine the course of your treatment needed.
What to expect during the PTA test?
During the PTA test, the Audiologist would make you sit in a soundproof room. You would be asked to wear a pair of headphones. The Audiologist would normally sit outside the soundproof room and play certain sounds on the headphones for you to hear. These sounds would be of various pitches. You would be asked to respond to the sounds you hear. You would have to indicate about your hearing to the audiologist. These indications would have to be given either by raising your hand or pressing certain buttons when you hear these sound tones. This primarily helps the Audiologist to know your range of hearing levels.
Another part of this test is done to know how well you hear vibrations pass through your ears. Your audiologist will put this metal device against the bone behind your ear. He or she may also use a bone oscillator to determine how well vibrations pass through the bone to your inner ear. You need not worry about the test as neither of them would cause any pain or discomfort during the test.
Normally a PTA test should take about 20-25 minutes. However since the test is subjective in nature, the response of the patient is critical for determining the correct results. The audiologist analyzes the results of the test and would try to explain to you the results on his or her audiogram. Following the test that he or she would determine the course of treatment depending on the results obtained. Certain treatments may involve use of hearing aid technology.
