As a woman are you taking painkillers regularly to relieve you from headaches and other type of aches? Beware! This may ultimately cause hearing loss problem in the long run. A recent study conducted in the US, warned that taking pain-killers such as ibuprofen for over six years may put women at the risk of hearing loss. Apart from regular use painkillers for headaches, it is often seen that women use them regularly for their periods. But apart from other health hazards regular use of painkillers have, loss of hearing is one of them.
Study showing strong relation between use of regular pain killers and hearing loss problem in women
The study adds to a growing body of evidence which links the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) or acetaminophen with loss of hearing in women. The exact manner in which this happens however is still unknown. The study carried out involved examination of data collected from over 54000 women between the ages of 48 and 73.
They analyzed information on usage of aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen, as well as self-reported hearing loss. Longer duration of ibuprofen or acetaminophen use was associated with higher risk of hearing loss. However the study did not find a significant relation between hearing loss and duration of usual-dose aspirin use.
Experts claim that the established side effect of use of high dose of aspirin is hearing loss problem. In recent years however the use of high dosage of the same has become uncommon. But experts feel that though analgesic use have become modest in recent times but at the same time they fear that even a moderate increase in the same may cause a significant rise in the risk of hearing loss. As a result any minor increase in the dosage of ibuprofen or acetaminophen could mean a rise of hearing loss in women in the US to the extent of 5.5 %.
