Are you aware of Tympanometry? It is an examination which is used to test the condition of the middle ear. The test also analyzes the mobility of the eardrum also known as the tympanic membrane and the conduction bones by creating variations of air pressure in the ear canal. It is therefore an important test which can be very useful in treatment of hearing loss in case it occurs due to problems in the middle ear.
Tympanometry : the procedure involved
Tympanometry is an objective test of the function of the middle-ear. It is not a hearing test. But it is rather a measure of energy transmission through the middle ear. The test is to be used for assessing the sensitivity of hearing and the results of this test should always be viewed in conjunction with other tests like pure tone audiometry.
How the test is performed?
Before the test, the audiologist might look inside your ear canal with an otoscope. This is a special instrument for looking in the ears. The routine is performed is to make sure there is no earwax or a foreign object obstructing the eardrum.
Following this a probe-type device would be placed in your ear canal. It could feel a little uncomfortable. You would hear loud tones as the device begins to take measurements. This test changes the air pressure in your ear to make the eardrum move back and forth. Measurements of the movement of your eardrum would be recorded in a tympanogram.
You should not move, speak, or swallow during the test. If you do, it would give an incorrect result. In case your child is having tympanometry, you may need to show them beforehand how the test will be done using a doll. This can help them prepare better for loud noises and help them staying still.
The test takes about only about two minutes for both ears. People of all ages can have tympanometry, which usually takes place in a doctor’s office. There are no risks related to the test.
