Studies published in the journals of American Medical Association have thrown up some interesting statistics about the problem of hearing loss. The most shocking one among them is that one out of every six Americans suffers from this problem! As you can probably figure out, the number of people suffering is a pretty high figure. And that is not confined to the aged or senior citizens alone. If that were the case, the number couldn’t have been so high. Young people are equally affected by this problem.
We had written earlier about the problem of hearing loss among youngsters. These studies have revealed that if you measure threat levels, the problem of noise induced hearing problem is as pronounced, if not more, than those caused by advancing age. It is a modern day myth that hearing issues crop up only when a person reaches a certain age. Like problems with vision, auditory senses can be damaged at an early age, too.
The study shows that the number of people suffering from ear problem has doubled up in the period of 2000 to 2015. This is the period when mobile devices took a boom and everyone has one on their hands. They are logged into it through headsets, listening to music incessantly. You take any public transport and you find youngsters tuned into their headsets, listening to songs on the way to office or college. Everyone seems to be a music lover! As collateral damage, their hearing ability is severely damaged and need immediate help.
Here, too, there are some myths that the study wants to dispel. For example, the corrective to hearing loss, devices like hearing aids, are more prevalently used these days than, say, a decade back. The myth riding piggyback on this is that hearing aid are not effective in dealing with the problem. The American study lays it to rest, once and for all, that with the use of proper devices, hearing loss can be minimized. In a quiet ambiance, it is efficient in helping the user pick up sound signals that would otherwise go unheard.
