Are you aware of the causes and symptoms of losing Hearing Ability? If we are suffering from this problem, we often do not detect the same. As a result the problem remains untreated. One reason for this is that the development of the problem is gradual. Through this blog we will try to make you aware the main causes of hearing loss and the early symptoms of the same.
The Hearing Process:
Our ear has three parts. These are the inner ear, the middle ear and the outer ear. The sound waves travel through the outer ear into the middle ear and strike the eardrum. The ear drum, also known as the tympanic membrane, vibrates in response to the sound waves which strike it. Three tiny bones in the middle ear amplify the sound while it travels through the fluid in the inner ear. There are a large number of hair like tiny nerve cells inside the inner ear, also called the Cochlea. These nerve cells convert the vibrations into electrical impulses which get transmitted to the brain, We hear as a result of this process.
Causes of Losing Hearing Ability
There are many causes of hearing loss.
Age Related Hearing Loss: With age there is a tendency of hearing loss. This may be on account of damage caused to the nerve cells in the inner ear. This could be of prolonged exposure to large noise. Certain medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure may also cause the same. Certain Medications which are toxic in nature may also damage the ear in old age.
Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL): If our ears are exposed to loud noise over prolonged periods then it may damage our inner ear. If we work at construction suites or at the factory we may face such problems. This type of hearing loss which occurs on account of exposure to noise is called Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL).
Certain Medications may cause hearing loss: Some medicines may lead to hearing loss.
Build of Ear Wax in the ear may cause hearing loss. Often with build of ear wax in our ears we may suffer from hearing loss. However the hearing ability gets restored with the removal of the ear wax.
Damage of the Ear Drum causes hearing loss. The ear drum or tympanic membrane may get damaged owing to trauma, injury leads to hearing loss.
Certain type of ear infections, bone growth in inner ear may also cause hearing loss.
Symptoms of Losing Hearing Ability:
When we are unable to hear and follow any conversation, which may be audible to others it is a symptom of hearing loss.
With age sometimes we may hear a roaring, hissing or ringing sound in our ears. The actual external sound may not be present and what we hear may only be a perception of sound. This condition is called Tinnitus.
Another symptom of hearing loss is loss of ability to hear higher pitched sound. In such case a man’s lower pitched speech may easier to follow. However a woman’s higher pitch voice and speech is difficult to follow.
