How do we hear?
Before understanding Hearing Loss let us try to understand the process by means of which we hear. Our ears consist of the Outer Ear, The middle Ear and the Inner Ear. The sound waves pass through our outer ear. In the middle ear the eardrum and 3 small bones amplify the vibrations as they travel to the inner ear. These vibrations pass through fluid in the inner ear also called the cochlea. Thousands of tiny hairs are attached to the nerve cells in the Cochlea which convert these vibrations into electrical signals which are finally transmitted to our brain and finally we hear.
Causes of hearing Loss:
The causes of Hearing Loss may be many; we have listed some major ones:
Damage of the Inner Ear: With age or with continuous exposure to loud noise our inner ear may lead to wear and tear of the hairs or nerve cells of the cochlea. Thus as a result the electrical signals which are sent to the brain may not be proper leading to hearing loss.
Build up of Ear Wax: Ear wax may get accumulated in the ear over a period of time owing to which it may prevent conduction of sound waves. With removal of the earwax however hearing loss occurring on this ground may be rectified.
Ear Drum Rupture: Owing to injury or other reason if the Ear drum also called the Tympanic membrane gets ruptured it leads to hear loss.
Ear Infections, Tumors, bone growths in ear: With the ear infections in the middle or outer ears or tumor or bone growths may lead to Hearing Loss.
So as mentioned the causes of hearing loss may be many. But it may so happen that the hearing loss may go unnoticed since it may be gradual and thus remain untreated.
