If you are a teenager or in case you have a son or daughter who is in that age group, you need to be aware of the dangers of hearing damage which is happening in youngsters globally. Experts in the field warn that it is a growing problem and getting worse day by day. Some of them are worried that there is a major public health challenge coming down the road in terms of difficulties with hearing. In a recent study in regard to hearing ability amongst teenagers, researchers interviewed and conducted hearing tests on a group of 170 students. There were in age group of 11 to 17 years old. The results revealed that almost all of them engage in risky listening habits.
Further testing was done on the same subjects in Sao Paulo, which showed that even though they could still hear as well as their peers. But those experiencing tinnitus were more likely to have a much reduced level of tolerance for loud noise. This is considered a sign of hidden permanent damage to the nerves that are used in processing sound. Experts feel that all these could serious hearing impairment later in life.
Why this hearing damage occurs?
Audiologists who deal with the problem explain that when the auditory nerves are damaged, brain cells increase their sensitivity to their remaining inputs. This can make ordinary sounds seem louder. However increased loudness perception is an indication of nerve injury that cannot be detected by the audiogram as it is a standard clinical test for hearing ability. Neuroscience research indicates that such “hidden hearing loss” caused by exposure to loud sounds in the early years deepens over the life span, worsening one’s hearing ability later in life.
According to experts exposure to high levels of sound is quite common in our environment, particularly amongst the youth. These loud sounds produce hidden cochlear injuries. Thus they warn that there is a strong need for youngsters to protect their ears. It is quite common for them to experience a ringing in the ears for the next day or so after listening to loud music. More than half the students in the study said it had happened to them. This brief tinnitus is an early warning sign of hearing problems, claim experts. Testing in this study showed that 28% of the participants had already developed persistent tinnitus. While some other types of hearing loss can be repaired, such nerve damage cannot be undone. The only solution, to such type of hearing loss is prevention.
